According to this year's study by Mobile Broadband India Traffic Index conducted by mobile phone maker Nokia, Indians are the largest spenders on mobile phones in the world. According to the report, by 2025, the time spent watching short videos will quadruple. After Finland, India has the highest number of broadband users on mobile phones.


Data usage among Indians has increased 63-fold in the last five years. This is the highest data usage increase in the world. No other country has seen such a significant increase in net usage during this period, Nokia Chief Marketing Officer Amit Marwah said in a report.

According to the report, the mobile phone used 164 petabytes of data in December 2015 and 10000 petabytes of data in December 2020.The average usage per person is 13.7 GB from the 4G network.

In the last one year, the average data usage per person in India has quadrupled. Of these, 55% use the Internet to watch short videos. Content on social media, YouTube and OTT platforms is the most used. Fintech, e-commerce and other browsing accounts for 45% of Internet usage. Short videos are more commonly seen among millennials. There has also been an increase in fixed broadband usage since the 2020 Covid19 expansion. In December 2014, FTTH‌ had wireless systems in just 6,900,000 homes, and by 2020 it had grown to 40 million.

There was a 30 percent increase in educational applications and a 265 percent increase in OTT platforms. The study also points out that with the advent of 5G, there will be a further increase in internet usage. Nokia's chief technology officer Randeep Raina, meanwhile, said 2G will not be discontinued soon as 300 million feature phones are in use.
