Australia to legislate against Google and Facebook

Australia is set to pass legislation that would force US technology giants Google and Facebook to pay for news content in the country. This information was released by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. As Australia becomes the first country to pay Facebook and Google for news content, a new parliamentary session and legislation could draw world attention. The Senate committee, which is examining the proposals, is accelerating consideration of the bill because it has not recommended any amendments.

Frydenberg said in an email that the bill could be considered in the House of Commons, which begins on February 15. However, Google had earlier denied Australia's request. They threatened to permanently withdraw their search engines from the country if they tried to force new laws that were nowhere to be found in the world.

But the world is watching to see if Australia will try to oust them before Google exits itself. Google and Facebook have not yet commented on the legislation.
